Budget Development
A budget is a financial proposal that reflects the work proposed.
- It outlines the expected project costs in detail and should mirror the project description.
- It is presented as a categorical list of anticipated project costs representing the researcher's best estimate of the funds needed to support the proposed work.
- It is a flexible tool to help the department administrator and scientific team plan for the project and understand what can and cannot be accomplished with the available funding.
Sponsors utilize the budget during the technical review of the project to evaluate the reasonability of the project costs.
- To ensure that enough funding will be available to complete the scope of work, prepare a detailed budget even when sponsors only require modular or lump sum budgets.
- Having the details readily available is beneficial if the sponsor requests additional details during the review process or at the just-in-time (JIT) phase, requiring a short-turn-around time.
Use the Sponsored Programs Office’s budget template website to access current Excel templates and budgeting resources. These templates are updated with the most up to date benefit and indirect cost rate information. Our practice is to develop the budget using the SPO templates and transfer the information to a sponsor specific budget form. This ensures the budget information provided to the sponsor is accurate and efficiently reviewed and confirmed by Sponsored Programs.
- Generic Proposal Budget Worksheet – use this PDS developed form to gather information from the PI and/or start brainstorming project-related costs to transfer to the SPO budget template. General guidance is provided for each cost category.
