Early Career: Planning for concurrent proposal deadlines
Quick Summary
- Changes in the federal funding landscape have resulted in deadline shifts such that many proposals for early career funding opportunities are now due within a short period of time.
- Early career investigators who plan to apply for more than one of these funding opportunities need to plan ahead and are advised to begin proposal preparation early.
- Please reach out to the PDS team at [email protected] if you'd like help developing a personalized planning calendar.
In 2026, disruptions in federal grant programs have led to an unusual convergence of early career proposal deadlines that were previously more staggered. In many cases proposal preparation time – the time between the release of funding opportunity announcements and proposal due dates – has also shortened.
While this environment presents challenges, it also creates an important opportunity: with thoughtful planning and early preparation, you can position yourself for success. Starting early and planning strategically is no longer just helpful, it is essential.
A Compressed NSF CAREER Season

Planning Ahead Is Key
Under typical conditions, preparing a competitive research proposal takes 4–5 months — longer if you are submitting multiple proposals. Recent NOFO releases, however, have provided much shorter turnaround times.
Beginning foundational work before a NOFO is released — refining aims, outlining project narratives, coordinating collaborators, and mapping timelines — can significantly reduce pressure and strengthen submissions.
If you are planning to apply for an NSF CAREER award this year, and especially if you and are considering another opportunity with a nearby deadline, the time to build your calendar and begin organizing is now.
